Grade 6 Projects
Google Design Logo
Evan B. - First Man on the Moon
Each year, Google has a contest to re-design their logo within a chosen topic. This year the theme is "If I could travel in time I'd visit...". Students researched important people, events, and time periods to discover what they would really wish to witness if they had the chance to travel in time.
Next, students had to express their ideas in picture form, and also include the Google logo. It was a challenging design lesson, and the final results were spectacular.
Google rewards the top winners with college scholarships, technology grants for the schools, and 24 hours to have your design on their website!
Students were also required to write a paragraph explaining their ideas for the project and the logo they created. The paragraph follows the TEEC outline used at LMS and will be part of the grade for the lesson.

Floor Plans
Sixth graders learned the universal language of floor plans! Students first practiced the symbols for things such as doors, closets, counters, sinks, windows, etc. and then used this information to help them design an original floor plan for a home.
This challenging lesson gave the students a chance to be creative while designing something that is also functional.
Picture to the left outlines the criteria for the Floor Plans lesson.

A Victorian PerspectiveA lesson on creating the illusion of
space & distance ~ For this lesson we used the image of the Taj Mahal
~ The lesson teaches students how to use basic perspective and realistic shading to create the illustion of space & distance. ~Students were also introduced to Victorian Architecture, and were challenged to integrate the Victorian features onto the Taj Mahal, which is a classic example of Islamic Architecture. ~ Color blending, use of highlights & shadows, as well as examples of good line work were also considered in the grading of the project. |
Drawing with Scissors
A lesson based on the cut-out artwork of Henri Matisse
Word Creations
This lesson began with the discussion of how important pictures are in communicating ideas. Most instructions don't even have words any more - just pictures! Technology has brought us into a visual age and our children need to be fluent in this language. Students thought of words that have a wealth of meaning, and can be explained through a variety of examples. Then they drew pictures to represent the meaning of the word. Lastly, students combined the pictures into the individual letters of the words. The focus of the lesson was to visually represent the meaning of the word in pictures. In the box to the right you can see how the lesson was evaluated with a rubric.

Color Unit
Sixth graders are working on a color unit in art class this month. The picture to the left shows how they did several experiments mixing the primary colors to achieve secondary, intermediate, and neutral colors. Several other variations of color were also achieved.
Students will use their knowledge of color to help them with the Image Completion project. Students are given a piece of a color photograph and must design an original picture around it. The color of the photo must match the rest of the color image they have drawn.
This lesson helps students to understand how color works, and also helps to sharpen their observational and problem solving skills.
Look for pictures of the Image Completion project in a few weeks!

Projects from Last Year
2010 - 2011 Collages ~ Exploring Africa & Asia
A few sixth grade classes worked on a social studies/art integration lesson with the help of Mrs. Doherty, the LMS Library Media Specialist.
In social studies, 6th graders have been studying either Africa or Asia. In art class we did some research of our own to learn about the culture of the area. Because culture is such a broad term, students were to study just one strand of culture, such as music, homes, landmarks, food, dance, sports, etc.
Collage is the technique we used to showcase what we had learned about the country. Students were shown many ways to use collage and collage materials such as torn paper, magazines, tissue paper, photographs, and drawings. This project was a great way to integrate the social studies and art curriculum, and the results are truly beautiful!

Hand Maps 2010 -2011
This lesson follows an art lesson where students create a two-level map using their hands and pictures of a particular hobby/interest (pictured at left).
The Hand Maps projects is an excellent exercise in creative thinking and problem solving. Students have to use map features to "map" a theme, such as sports, playing music, art, or other things that they do with their hands.
